Additional death reported in Washoe County, active cases decrease for first time

Reno/Sparks, NV – The Regional Information Team is reporting an additional COVID-19-related death in Washoe County.
The deceased was a female in her 100s and it’s under investigation whether there were underlying health conditions. This is the 22nd COVID-19-related death in Washoe County.
Additionally, there were 29 recoveries, which is the most reported in one day for Washoe County. Active cases went down for the first time from 494 to 490, and there were 26 additional cases.
- Total COVID-19 cases in Washoe County: 736 (+26 from 4/22)
- Deaths: 22 (+1)
- Recoveries: 224 (+29)
- Active cases: 490 (-4)
- Currently hospitalized: 42 (+2)
- Cases who have discharged from hospital: 49 (+6)
Hospital bed and ventilator information
In Washoe County as of April 22, 2020:
- 60 percent of short-term, acute-care hospital beds are occupied (+3% since April 20)
- 54 percent of the Intensive Care Unit beds are occupied (+1%)
- 27 percent of ventilators are in use (+3%)
Total number of COVID-19 tests in Washoe County: 8,356 (+204)
As of April 22, 2020, a total of 8,356 COVID-19 tests have been performed in Washoe County. The tests may include non-Washoe County residents who were tested in Washoe County.
Race & Ethnicity COVID-19 Report
Race and ethnicity will be added to the COVID-19 Dashboard soon, but below is a breakdown for April 23. It is not required by the Health District for residents to identify their race and ethnicity; therefore, the numbers below do not represent the entire portion of people in Washoe County who are COVID-19 positive.
Total Positive COVID-19 cases in Washoe County: 736
Total reports of race and ethnicity: 423 (57 percent)
Of those reports:
- American Indian/Alaska Native: 5 (1%)
- Asian: 14 (3%)
- Black: 8 (2%)
- Declined to answer: 1 (0.2%)
- Hispanic: 203 (48%)
- Multiple: 1 (0.2%)
- Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander: 2 (0.4%)
- White: 189 (45%)
The Washoe County Health District concurs with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regarding COVID-19 and stigmatization of populations. The CDC has stated that people of any descent are not at greater risk of spreading COVID-19 than other Americans, and that stigma and discrimination can occur when people associate a disease, such as COVID-19, with a population or nationality, even though not everyone in that population or from that region is specifically at risk for the disease. Stigma can also occur after a person has been released from COVID-19 quarantine even though they are not considered a risk for spreading the virus to others.

FAQ: Antibody Testing
The Nevada State Public Health Lab (NSPHL) is in the process of developing Antibody testing capacity and it is currently unavailable at this time. The Lab will announce its availability to the public through the media when it is available.
When the test is available the test can only be ordered through the Health District or your clinician, not by the NSPHL. See more FAQs here.
Virtual Town Hall Friday, April 24, 2020 at 1 p.m.
This week’s Regional Information Center Virtual Town Hall will focus on public safety and the mental and physical health and wellness of our community during the COVID-19 pandemic.
