Reno/Sparks, NV – The Regional Information Center is reporting 108 new COVID-19 cases in Washoe County, the highest number of COVID-19 cases in one day. The previous record was 90 cases set on June 24.
Active COVID-19 cases in Washoe County also reached a new high with 806, breaking the record of 748 on June 24.
This influx is not a result of laboratory backlog or any large facility outbreak.
“The increase is tied to people going back to their normal, everyday, pre-COVID-19 activities,” said Kevin Dick, District Health Officer for Washoe County. “Our contact tracers are seeing small, widespread clusters related to residents congregating with people outside their household.”
The two largest single-day increases in Washoe County have occurred in the last three days. Community transmission of COVID-19 is rampant in Washoe County and the most common activities among COVID-19-positive cases are:
- Going to work while sick
- Attending indoor and outdoor family/friend gatherings
- Retail shopping, including the grocery store
- Restaurant dining
- Parties (Bridal showers, baby showers, graduation parties, weddings)
The Incident Management team and the Washoe County Health District strongly support Governor Sisolak’s directive that requires Nevadans and visitors to wear face coverings when in public. See the directive guidance here. Face coverings, proper handwashing and social distancing are three key behaviors residents are advised to observe in order to slow the transmission of COVID-19 in our community.
